Winter Forest Study
8"x8"
Acrylic on Canvas
I have to admit that I really struggled painting a canvas this size. It's just too small. It could be the size of my brushes, or the size of the canvases I have been working on lately, but this certainly took me out of my comfort zone.
But isn't that a good thing every once in a while?

I am working on a very large commission right now, which is keeping me busy. I painted this one a couple of monthes ago. I would like to go back and paint this barn in the winter. So far I have painted it in the summer and fall. It has great "bones".

Snowfall on Birches
16"x16"
Acrylic on Canvas
SOLD
We have been getting some major snowstorms this week. Today is the third day this week that my son has had a snow day at school (read buses cancelled, so no school). Needless to say he is happy to stay at home and play in the white stuff.
Amazing how a change in the seasons always seems to kick start the urge to paint those transformations. I have been culling my photos from previous winters, and now have a number of images to paint from, starring that beauty from above: snow!

60"x48"
Acrylic on Canvas
SOLD
This is the painting that I was working on during the open studio Arts Tour in October. I finally finished it last week. Unfortunately the photo doesn't do it justice. I need to add a tripod to my "want to get list". I am sure it would make a difference when photographing art, especially when it is this large in size!

I am rather obsessed with artist's studios at the moment, especially since I am in the process of planning my new one, which will be located in an unfinished old workshop attached to our house. I am hoping to begin construction in Jan/Feb.
I have mentioned the book Inside the Painter's Studio before, which is a favourite book of mine, exploring a number of famous contemporary artists' studios in and around New York. Now I am very excited to tell you about a website created by an artist friend of mine Peter John Reid. The website is called My Studio Space, and it is a completely interactive website where not only can you see other artists studios, but you can upload your own! The point is to show the diverse spaces people work out of, no matter how small or how big. It includes information like light sources, flooring type, floor plans, wall colours, and storage tips. Check it out, and I hope that if you are an artist you will contribute!

I visited the McMichael Gallery yesterday in Kleinburg, Ontario, home of Canada`s Group of Seven. It is amazing to stand in front of such beautiful, inspiring art. What is marvelous there is that it isn`t always the large scale, well know pieces that grab you, but the little gems, that were painted outside on site so many years ago. One painting that grabbed me, that I had not seen before was Lawren Harris` `Shacks`. Though the reproduced image in the link does not do the painting justice. You must see it in person to truly appreciate it. Like all art!

Goldenrod Glow
24"x18"

SOLD
This painting is based on a photograph I took on a hike with a bunch of girlfriends a week ago. We went out to Castle Glen near Collingwood, and saw the remains of the old "castle" there. We came across a huge swath of goldenrod that could be seen through the woods along the trail. It was brilliant.

Had a fantastic time out plein air painting with my friend Deirdre yesterday. We were hanging out in Metcalfe forest, which is just a magical kind of place. Though my canvas from yesterday needs a bit of work, I took a ton of great photos which will inspire many new pieces.
This is a painting that I completed a couple of weeks ago. Usually I struggle with naming paintings, though this one came to mind quite easily (and I love the name too). I have found that it helps me to keep a running list of potential titles that I could use for paintings. About 50% of the time I will use a name from the list, and other times the title will appear in the old noggin' during or after I have painted a piece. How do you name your paintings?
